Facade design –  Tokyo, Japan

In collaboration with the Japanese studio ArchTank, KACADU designed a permanent facade installation in Tokyo’s Jiyugaoka district exploring privacy through light diffusion and material experimentation, for the 1x1 Personal Gym new site. The installation reinterprets masonry using lightweight, transparent 3D-printed PETG bricks with an interlocking system designed for seismic conditions.

Through curved edges, controlled infill patterns, and inclined inner surfaces, the facade softly diffuses daylight while preserving privacy for the gym interior, allowing occupants to see out without exposing the space inside.

The project was developed through extensive material research and rapid prototyping focused on the optical and structural behaviour of transparent 3D-printed elements.

By testing variations in wall thickness, temperature, print speed, and internal geometry, the design explored how thin sleeves, hollow chambers, and denser woven infill patterns could control light diffusion, transparency, and structural performance simultaneously. Thinner surfaces scattered light softly, while thicker and more complex internal structures produced increasingly opaque and textured effects. The visible infill patterns became both functional and ornamental, transforming fabrication logic into an architectural expression. Continuous printing and production optimisation enabled the rapid fabrication of over 250 unique interlocking bricks, balancing efficiency, fabrication time, and the visual character of the final installation.
